Temple of Lomarith

Overview

Temple of Lomarith continues the game's cosmic storyline, guiding the player toward a mysterious temple. I designed the level around large cosmic gates, inspired by torii gates, that guide the player toward the temple. Each gate the player passes through changes the world around them in unexpected ways.

The experience is structured into three acts; the cliffs, the shipyard, and the temple landing, all separated by deep-water swimming sections that intentionally slow the pace and build tension. The goal was to create a growing sense of unease and give a feeling of dread that something unknown is lurking in the depths.

Cliffs

The cliffs establish the temple as the level's main objective and ultimate destination. I wrapped the path around the side of the cliffs to allow the temple to fill the player's view, reinforcing its importance. As the player follows the path around, the camera naturally centers on the secondary and immediate objective: the gate.

Shipwreck

The shipwreck area is where the player spends most of their time in the level. I designed the central combat arena first, then built the surrounding paths around it, using its walls and cover to define the footprint of the rest of the area. Passing through the central gate transforms the area into a storm-torn version of itself, with floating ships revealing the next gate high in the sky.

Temple Landing

The temple landing serves as the final build-up before the level's climax, with the temple dominating the player's view throughout the space. After the opening encounter, combat intentionally gives way to exploration, allowing players to cross the area multiple times without additional enemy spawns. This shift in pacing builds suspense ahead of the cinematic finale while encouraging exploration through optional secrets hidden across the layered environment.
